One of the things that made Mustang such a successful car for Ford Motor Co. was the fact that the car could be so many things to so many people.  In its basic form, the six cylinder hard top was a fun sporty, relatively inexpensive automobile to own and operate.  In its V-8 GT format, it was a very potent muscle car able to keep up the some of the best European high-performance cars, at least on the expressway. In its convertible format, the car was hugely popular on the auto rental front, always being the first cars to rent out even before the (same price) Lincolns. Also, The convertible was (and still is)  extremely popular with both nostalgic baby boomers and people able to purchase convertibles at twice the price but feeling the Mustang is virtually as good as the fine European convertibles at half the money.
