The 1982 to 1986 Mustang was very
similar to the 1979 design but this serious reintroduced the Mustang
convertible which was released in 1982 as either a late 1982 or early 1983
model. Mustang collectors may not agree that there was an 82 convertible
model, but as an owner of one of the first 1982 Mustang convertibles, I
can definitely confirm the fact that there was a late 1982. My Mustang
convertible was a 3.8 later liter V-6 with a red exterior, a white
interior and a white top. I purchased the car used around 1986. And car
already had an interesting history having been owned by a very attractive
but somewhat careless lady who had already had to collisions and
generally took very poor care of the car. After spending a few hundred
dollars reconditioning the it, I drove and enjoyed car on a daily basis
for over four years without any significant mechanical problems. Anywhere
I went with the car people would stop and admired it. When I bought five
series BMW, I was able to sell car privately for exactly what I paid, and
I could have easily gotten more money in the new buyer was an F-16 Air
Force pilot who I knew would take picture of the car. Despite the fact
car was not well taken care of, it was one of the most reliable and least
expensive cars but have ever owned, and everybody commented what a nice
car it was.
Along with the reintroduction of the
convertible, Ford continued to make improvements from 1982 to 1986,
generally increasing the horsepower of both the V-6 and V-8 which went up
to 200 horsepower in the 1986 serious. By this time the Mustang was once
again becoming quite muscular, with a 0 to 60 time around seven seconds.
Unfortunately, the four-cylinder turbo charged engine was costlier to
produce and nowhere near as reliable as the eight cylinder engine thus
ending the production of Mustang's four-cylinder turbo.
